JDPs warn farmers against the use of GMO, enjoin them to stay true to natural seed selection techniques.

The Rural Development Departments of the Justice, Development and Peace (JDPs) of Province of Ibadan comprising; Ibadan Archdiocese, Osogbo, Oyo, Ekiti and Ilorin Dioceses have cautioned framers across the province against the uses of the Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) seeds as an alternative to natural seed selection techniques to which they are acquainted.

This was contained in a statement jointly issued by the Provincial Rural Development Team under the Chairmanship of Mr. Emmanuel Aikhomen of Archdiocese of Ibadan during the Provincial Exchange Forum held in Ado-Ekiti.

According to the statement “Having critically looked into the development and carefully considered the possible advantages and disadvantages associated with the initiative and likely effects on small scale farmers in a plenary session and its product-intake upshot on humanity, it is therefore suggested that farmers across the states should avoid the use of Genetically Modified Organism Seeds that are capable of causing irreparable damages to the nation’s biodiversity.

We equally use the best of this medium to direct the Provincial RUDEPs to link up with Dialogue in Partnership Service (DPS) office of MISEREOR in Abuja, to further liaise with CARITAS NIGERIA, on the GMO seeds as there is limit to the extent the message can go if solely handled by the province. The Rural Development in Ibadan Ecclesiastical Province should work with target farmers to promote the use of natural seed selection techniques for crops production on their field, information sharing and awareness creation on GMOs should be embarked upon and various programs should reach out directly to concerned government ministries, departments and agencies.”

The Forum also urged the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) and National Biodiversity Management Agency (NBMA) to urgently rally relevant stakeholders from the sector and adopt Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) as it would help in gaining the confidence of international market while Government should regulate food safety issues affecting production of agro produce.

Others present at the Provincial Exchange Forum were Departmental Heads of Rural Development Prorammes, Mrs.Bola olorede-Ibadan Archdiocese, Mrs.Onaolapo Morenike-Osogbo Diocese, Mr.Anthony Oqunnupebi-Oyo Diocese, Mr.Remigius Eze-Ekiti Diocese and Mr.David Omotoso of Ilorin Diocese.

A group of Farmers’ Association in the Osun State also known as Sustainable Farmers’ Association (SUFA) under the Rural Development Programme of the Justice, Development and Peace Makers’ Centre (JDPMC), Osogbo has described the Organization’s useful recommended agricultural practices given to its target groups for the enhancement of their Crops and Animals production, of which have created positive ripple effects on their Standard of Living.

The Farmers’ Group made this known at the zonal Exchange Visit Organized by the Department of the Rural Development of the Justice Development and Peace Makers’ Centre of Osogbo which comprised Sustainable Farmers’ Group from Ijesa zone, Osogbo zone, Ila zone and Atakumosa zone respectively. The zonal exchange visits were held in  Ila Ijesa-Atakumosa West Local Government, Igangan-Atakumosa East, Owode Ede- Ede North Local Government and Ayetoro Ominla in Ifedayo Local Government.

 Evang. Jerome Fatokun and Chief Peter Akinyemi in their separate remarks on behalf of the Farmers’ Group, noted that according to the baseline survey carried out so far among the Farmers’ Groups, the technical intervention and support ranging from consistence agricultural extension services, recommendation of indigenous pest and diseases control, introduction of modern day agricultural practices most especially, timely supply of farm inputs to them have paid off and dramatically improved their agricultural turns over.

“There is no gain saying that the relationship between Sustainable Famers’ Association and Rural Development Programme over the years has yielded positive chain of multiplier effects both in cash and kind. Today many of us can lay claim on some tangible achievements resulted from technical assistance and support being received from the Organisation due to their willingness and passion to serve the humanity and equating everyone created in the image of God to a good measure of dignified life,” They said.

Addressing the Farmers during the sub-group and experience sharing meeting, the Programme Supervisor Mrs.Onaolapo Morenike  on behalf of the Management of the Organisation,  admonished the Group of Farmers across the four Local Governments to always abide and work towards the standardized farm produces and quality control specifications that would command commercial values in the international market. She added that, they should also form themselves into commodity marketing groups that would make them to overcome challenges faced by individuals in marketing their commodity and increase their chances of accessing better opportunities related to produce marketing. Other Programme Officers at the programme were Mr.James fashola, Mrs.Veronica Olaoye ,  Mr. Charles Fasina and Miss Ayanwusi Omolola.

The programme provided opportunity for the Farmers to visit other farmers’ field for experience sharing, bear their minds on emerging challenges that could pose a threat to their farm business and there was also a room for cross fertilization of ideas for a way forward.

     

 

RUDEP adds feather to the cap of Sustainable Farmers Association, enhances their agricultural market profitability.

It was an eye opener for the Members of the Sustainable Farmers Association under the Rural Development Programmes Department of the Justice Development and Peace Makers’ Centre of Osogbo (JDPMC) as 2019 Institution Learning Visit was paid to the Leventis Foundation Nigeria, in Ilesa, Osun State.

The Institution learning visit, which cut across all the Members of the Sustainable Farmers Association in the thirteen Local Governments of Osun state, exposed the participants to the innovative Skills and latest Best Practices in the Agricultural Sector and workable models of market profitability of their farm produces.

According to the Programme Supervisor of the Rural Development Programmes Programme (RUDEP) of the Justice Development and Peace Makers’ Centre, Mrs.Onaolapo Morenike “this is an encompassing programme which aimed at strengthening the target Farmers, especially the youth across various areas of specializations in the Agricultural sector in order to acquire certified knowledge and required skills in relation to the global standard that are capable of bringing ingenuity to a fore in farmers produce.

Before arriving at this idea, the need of the farmers across the coverage areas in Osun state has firstly been identified and this was what led us to the Leventis Foundation today. Of course, it will not end here as field assessment will be carried out on regular basis so as to measure the impacts that the learning visit has brought to the Lives of our Farmers in relation to yield, income and livelihood enhancement. This is part of our goals.”

In their separate remarks, the programme Officers, Mr. James Fasola, Mr. Charles Fashina and Mrs. Veronica Olaoye expressed optimism that the singular effort is capable of increasing the standard living of the farmers and rural dwellers in the Osun state. It was added that; the experience gained through the visit, if well utilized could be boost economic fortunes and Gross Domestic Products of the country.

While speaking on behalf of other farmers, the President of the Sustainable Farmers Association in the South West, Chief Peter Adeyemi commended Rural Development Programmes Department of the Justice Development and Peace Makers’ Centre for always sourcing a better means of enhancing mass food production in the State of Osun. He therefore promised on behalf of the participants to extend experience gained to other farmers in various rural communities around them.

DSC09834             The Programme Manager and Head of Department for Rural Development Programme of the Justice Development and Peace Makers’ Centre (JDPMC) of Osogbo Diocese, Mrs. Onaolapo Morenike had said that over one million Farmers across the thirty one (31) Local Governments of Osun State benefit directly and indirectly from various Agriculturally-based interventions of the Rural Development Programme (RUDEP) of the Justice Development and Peace Makers’ Centre of Osogbo Catholic Diocese.

           Mrs.Onaolapo noted this in an interview with the Journalists during the just concluded Strategic Planning Meeting with a cross section of the Apex Members of the Sustainable Farmers Association held in JDPMC office, Osogbo.

According to the Programme Manager, the Rural Development Programme is an initiative of Catholic Diocese of Osogbo, initiated to have rural dwellers in the coverage areas with improved skills and knowledge as well as changed attitude for sustainable agricultural and social development. The target farmers formed and registered as autonomous farmers’ body called “Sustainable Farmers Association” which is structured into group, zone and apex respectively.

The Programme Manager explained that the initiative has given birth to many formidable Farmers’ groups across Osun State and affected positively Agricultural Productions and standard of living of the target group through technical capacity building, access to information, quality input supports, access to credit facilities, learning and experience sharing, linkage and collaboration and other useful areas of interventions such as public awareness programmes on radio which over the years have been yielding positiverresult and touching millions of lives who desire Agriculture as a key calling.

She added that, the strategic planning workshop was attended by farmers’ representatives from Four Zones, namely:  Osogbo, Ijesa, Ila and Atakumosa zones. These representatives are the ones who form APEX body and include the representatives of different socio-economic groups within the target groups, with the hope to put in place strategic plans that would guide the association’s operations for the next five years which shall base on agreed recommendations of the Association. The Meeting also afforded the farmers to bring into perspective things they have done in the past, the SWOT analysis of the Association and what they intend to do for the future. It was equally an avenue to strengthen their unity of purpose thereby bringing about unified Agricultural Blueprint that will define their course of focus in the noble chosen field.

“You will, no doubt, agree with me that the RUDEP intervention is strongly backed up by consistent participatory monitoring and evaluation of the Farmers’ situation and performance, which mostly centred on the identification of the farmers’ needs and consequently resulted into development of a set of measures which can address the needs of the farmers in the projected interventions. This has made our various interventions a demand driven one.”

She maintained further “Unequivocally, I dare boldly say that through our pragmatic approaches and direct contact strategies, Rural Development Programme under the auspices of JDPMC has positively impacted on millions of People in our large scale efforts with support from our highly esteemed International Donor considering our sensitizing programmes on radio and enlightening social media platforms, community-based training and various workshops that enhanced farmers’ technical know-how on subject matters which place no limitation on anyone,” She affirmed.

Speaking one after the other, Mr. Adegboye fatai, Remilekun Ojo, Mr.Fatokun Jeremiah commended the outcome of the Meeting of which they adjudged productive and enhancing to their needs while promising to multiply and share the experience gained in the Meeting to the others at their various Zones.

In his remark, the programme officer for Rural Development Programme of the Justice Development and Peace Makers’ centre of Osogbo Diocese. Mr. Charles Fashina charged the Members of the Sustainable Farmers Association to leverage on the Information Communication Technology and global Digitization that would afford them of favourable market system to sell their farm produces so as to scale up among the Contemporaries in Nigeria.

Part of the top priorities examined in the meeting were redefinition of Association’s Vision and Mission’s Statements that placed premium on safe and sustainable food provision through networking and collaborations with relevant Agencies, coalition building, advocacy, learning and experience sharing, indigenous research development and many others. Other areas of priority are development of Association objective, strategies and five years Action plan which runs through 2019 and 2023.
