2023: Nigerian Women ready to jostle power with men, vow to secure more seats

There is an impression that the journey to power in 2023 by Nigerian-political Men will no longer be a business as usual as Nigerian women particularly in Osun have braced up and prepared to jostle power with their male counterparts come 2023 General Elections.

This fresh fact emerged at the serial reorientation workshops organized by the Justice, Development and Peace Makers’ Centre (JDPMC), Osogbo for women across 20 Local Government Areas of Osun State.

The workshops titled “women’s participation in politics, governance and community development” orientated towards a reawakening of women’s consciousness to their political and community civic responsibilities.

In her presentations as a key facilitator of the programme, the former Commissioner for Finance to Osun state Governement, Chief (Mrs) Oluremi Wilson stressed the need for all women in Nigeria to rise up to their rights and make the best use of the legal framework (30% power-sharing formula) as it contains in the resolution documents of the fourth world women conference held in Beijing 1995.

“Let us be frank with ourselves at this juncture, there is no gainsaying that our destiny is now in our hands for men are not ready to give up any political seat. This by implication implies that it is high time we turned our lacklustre and indifferent attitude to penchant and be wary of the old cliché that says that; ‘woman’s place is in the Kitchen’ that was then and not anymore. Let us make the best use of the 30% as provides for us in the resolution of the fourth world women conference held in Beijing 1995″, she said.

Addressing the motley women drew from across 20 Local Governments on the philosophy behind the reorientation workshop, the General Coordinator of the Justice, Development and Peace Makers’ Centre (JDPMC), Rev.Fr.Peter Akinkunmi clearly maintained that poor participation of Nigerian women in political space and key policy-making, as well as the economic planning has been a big minus to the nation so, in order to avert more worst from happening, that was why JDPMC had to come up with this idea.

“It is very important you all get the idea behind this training clearly that it is not a question of movement for gender supremacy but rather a matter of recognizing potentials and capabilities of women in Good Governance & National Development. Nigeria has really suffered a huge setback in Politics, Governance and Community Development which JDPCMC feels it is not too good for Democracy. Your roles are clear and lucid enough, all you need to do is to go and change the world and reverse the ugly trend in politics and your various communities through your participation in politics which must be characterized by politeness and humility. You must get your footing in Nigeria’s political space, economic planning and key decision making for a better Nigeria,” he concluded.

Speaking on behalf of other women Influencers shortly after their inauguration , Hon.Tayo Adebisi, Mrs.Yemisi Falope and Mrs. Alamu Abosede stated that participation of women in politics, governance and community development with active mobilization of other women at the grassroots are key and non-negotiable come 2023 General Elections as they are ready to take an active place in politics and governance. They also promised to secure more seats in various political capacities by employing train the trainer strategy. While calling for unity of purpose among women in order to make the dream comes true.
