World Environment Day: JDPMC warns Nigerians against toxic environmental practices

Nigerians have been charged to shun all manners of unhygienic practices that might result to the environmental degradation and hazard especially in this rainy season but rather should promote environmental-friendly agriculture and good sanitation as well as hygiene practices in their various communities.

The General Coordinator of the Justice, Development and Peace Makers’ Centre (JDPMC), Osogbo Rev.Fr.Peter Akinkunmi stated this in his World Environment Day message through the Programme Supervisor,Mrs. Morenike Onaolapo of the Rural Development Programme.

Fr. Akinkunmi described Environment as a cherishable heritage and free gift of nature which required concerted efforts of every human being to keep it fit for a living and habitation. He however expressed his regret at the low level of hygiene practices in Nigeria which could portend serious dangers on existence of humanity and development of the nation among which were deforestation, mining, use of toxic substance and chemical weapons, bush burning, over grazing and bad agricultural, sanitation practices as well as pollution of various forms.

He therefore called for strategically and holistically designed measures with actions that promote tree planting, total eradication of unwarranted and destructive mining activities, not only these but also mitigate against land, air, water pollution, promote zero bush burning, environmental friendly agriculture, good sanitation and hygiene practices in all our communities so that every could live in fulfillment of God’s purpose for their lives.

“One of our basic tenets in our organization is protection of children holistically. We carefully chose this occasion to show love to these children in order to mark their Day as it is true that majority of them might have never experienced such due to their background or circumstances of their birth. But beyond this clause, it is part of our mandate in our organization to show them we truly  love them  and  that they are important  to us,irrespective of their religion, sex,  social-status, tribe, background or colour, the Catholic church is known for her generosity and love wile protecting the dignity of the recipients of such services,

Let it be known that we are strongly committed to the matter of any child in this state, therefore no one should dare to assault or infringe on their rights. I want to assure them all that they are not alone in the journey of life because JDPMC is more than willing to help every child to access  a meaningful life.”, he affirmed.

Defilement: JDPMC seeks Justice for a 13-year old rape victim.

A prominent faith-based and non-governmental organization in Osun state popularly known as Justice Development and Peace Makers’ Centre (JDPMC), Osogbo has advocated for the swift Justice over an alleged rape case of 13-year old girl (name withheld) in Ilesa, Osun state by her grandparents’tenant who was identified as Adedeji Adetunji.

The victim, who lived with her grandparents upon the death of her mother and abandonment by her father, reported the incident to her grandparents the very first time the alleged rapist took advantage of her. However, due to perceived financial implications of prosecution of cases and lack of information about structures that could defend fundamental rights of people especially indigent persons, the old and poor grandparents could not report the matter but only action taken by the victim’s grandparents in 2019 when the suspect first committed the offence was to insist that the rapist signed an undertaken never to abuse the victim again but contrary to the undertaken signed by the rapist, he continued with his evil act.

It was reported by the victim that the suspect had been serially violating her by covering her face before taking her to his room where he usually raped her and threatened to kill her if she ever told anybody. She further stated that the suspect always monitored her grandparent’s movement and took advantage of her grandparents’ absence to carry out the dastardly mission.

This had been lingered on until the situation assumed a different dimension on the 2nd of February 2020 when the victim took a bold step to confide in someone, who later enlightened and informed the grandparents of the victim of structures available for the protection of fundamental rights for no cost.

Following this development, it was gathered that the suspect was arrested and arraigned before Justice Adesayo of the Magistrate court 2 in Ilesha, Osun state.  The alleged rapist however pleaded not guilty.

Reacting to the development, the Legal Aid Officer of the JDPMC; Barrister Onoja Veronica assured Nigerians, most importantly the family of the Victim that Justice would not be perverted but rather duly served as the Organization was committed to the case and had channeled the matter to the appropriate quarters for necessary actions.

“It has become obvious that some people are enemies of the future of our community because they have made it their goal to destroy the proper development of children who are our future. Hence, all hands must be on deck to protect our children (especially our girls) from these bad elements by teaching our children basic protection strategies and speaking out against such persons. On the part of JDPMC, we shall ensure justice is done and the perpetrator punished accordingly,” She affirmed.

Meanwhile case has been adjourned to 21st of May, 2020.

OPEN-SECRET: JDPMC-IFES’ report indicts major political parties of violation of Campaign Finance Law in the 2019 Kogi&Bayelsa Gubernatorial Polls.

FINAL REPORT FOR KOGI PDFFINAL BAYELSA REPORT

Confronted like never before by the plague of poverty, population explosion, growing polarization and reels of humanitarian crisis, Nigeria has never stood in need as it does today of a level playing ground by which its’ people would elect the best candidates to steer the course of her leadership at all levels as it is proper of a modern democracy.

Elections processes and outcomes marred by all shades of irregularities and malpractices, decades of failed leadership since return to democracy in 1999 compels the ongoing efforts towards the emergence of frameworks, institutions and processes that could facilitate credible elections to produce the required leadership worthy of modern democracy. Poorly regulated in-flow and out-flow of party and campaign finance has remained the vital force of all malpractices such as election violence, gender discrimination, election rigging, ‘godfatherism’, vote buying and all forms of patron-cliental politics. These decades of unchecked malpractices strongly question the efficiency of the legal framework regulating party/campaign financing as well as its enforcement and citizen’s oversight efforts. Unless the influence of money is significantly and consistently checked in the election of leaders, Nigeria would be plunged into complex crisis under poor leadership.

As steps to checking the grave consequences of growing and unchecked bold contravention of laws regulating campaign finance to democracy and development in Nigeria, the Justice Development and Peace Makers Centre in collaboration with the International Federation for Electoral Systems have initiated and embarked upon a well-planned 4-months campaign finance monitoring project of prominent political parties for the November 2019 gubernatorial election of Bayelsa state. It is not unconnected with previous efforts of this partnership in campaign finance monitoring which had already been undertaken in the Osun state gubernatorial election in 2018, the 2019 general election and the Bayelsa state gubernatorial election of November 2019.

This publication shares the processes and findings of the initiative for the November 2019 Bayesla state gubernatorial election with all stakeholders in a timely manner. The aim is to promote multi-stakeholder response which is the pathway out of the critical situation which the protracted incapacity of the legal frameworks, processes and relevant institutions to regulate campaign finance subject democracy and development in Nigeria. To be found in this publication among others include the evolution of strategy, operational mechanism, implementation exercises, conclusions of the project as well as recommendations for the strengthening of party/ campaign finance regulation in Nigeria.
